Unspoilt Teesdale

UPPER TEESDALE is one of England’s last true unspoilt Dales, home to the breathtaking scenery of the Northern Pennines and a haven of utter relaxation.

Middleton-in-Teesdale, on the northern banks of the River Tees, is more a large village than a town with old stone buildings, characteristic of the northern Dales with a large village green and church dating back to 11th century.

Its the perfect base to escape the rigors of everyday life and explore the regions of Teesdale, Weardale, Northumberland and the Lakes as well as the ancient cities of Durham and York.

Spring transforms this unique micro-climate and Upper Teesdale is home to the rare Blue Gentian, a relic from the Ice Age, as well as a host of Bird's Eye Primrose, Globeflowers and Melancholy Thistle.

The woods and walks are fragrant with wild garlic and whether you like to walk the Pennine Way, Teesdale Way, Weardale Way,  explore the fells or simply ramble to England's highest waterfall, High Force.

Summer is the perfect backdrop for outdoor pursuits.  Water sport enthusiasts can choose from water skiing, windsurfing, canoing and sailing at local reservoirs.

Golfers can enjoy the 18-hole course at Barnard Castle.

Cycle some of the country's most breath-taking views, revel in the pollution-free air -  and some of the safest, unclogged roads! Or go off-road on horseback.

If you really cannot unwind unless you've shopped till you've dropped, then bustling Newcastle and the Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping complex, at Gateshead, are only one hour's drive away.

Similarly the world heritage site of Durham Cathedral is also a short car journey away.
